Western Michigan Christian’s Sound of Music 2020

Filling the Halls of WMC with the Sound of Music

This year the WMC Theater department brought Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music to life in West Michigan. With a cast of twenty-five, the production had three shows with opening night on March 6th, 2020 followed by a matinee and evening performance the next day.

Our cast was lead by Ashley Erdman as Maria Rainer, David Clausing, as Captain Georg von Trapp, Trinity Nelson as Baroness Schraeder, Luke Hanes as Max Detwiler, and Michaela Faith, Jonathan Williams, Jessica & Maria Eenigenberg (WMC students) Ezra Foreman, Sadie Menefee, and Emma Cuti (Muskegon Christian School students) as the von Trapp Children.

The musical score was performed by a live orchestra under the direction of everyone’s favorite maestro, Philip David DeYoung. The twist this year was that the orchestra was not in a pit, but rather, secluded behind the set on stage.

The production was auditioned and cast in December of 2019 with auditions open to all students that attend the five-school WMCS member school family. Rehearsals commenced as soon as the students returned from Christmas break as is the annual tradition.

“Theatre has the unique ability to teach. It teaches us that everyone belongs and everyone has a place in our world. Theatre teaches empathy and understanding for other’s situations it also teaches public speaking, self-confidence, and quick thinking skills all-important to thrive in our social world. Though it is always a struggle to get participants and support for our theatre program at WMC we have some of the most dedicated students, and families involved. They truly represent some of the best the school has to offer in academics, artistry, and character and is the biggest reason to return year after year,” explained show director Jason Bertoia who has been leading WMC musical theater for twelve years.
