Counseling Office Newsletter: Winter Edition

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed

I can’t believe that 1st trimester is already done and exams have come and gone.  The counseling office is bustling with seniors applying to college and looking at post-secondary options.  That post-secondary decision is a big one, and the seniors are feeling this pressure.  As parents you are able to help this process by starting conversations early.  Even as 7th graders, students can begin pursuing their interests and talking about what they might want to do.   We will also be doing this at WMC.  We want to start conversations early and help our students see the importance of all their years at WMC, 7th-12th grade.

The counseling office has also been working on new and upcoming programs to benefit our students.  Our counseling group has been launched and there will be others to follow.  We want to support our students in all areas; this includes social/emotional, career development and academic development.  Please let us know if your student  is struggling so that we can come alongside them and encourage them in their journey.  Thank you for the opportunity to work with each of your children!

Things you might not know about…Anxiety

  • 6.3 Million teens in the U.S. ages 13-18 struggle with an anxiety disorder.
  • 3 million adolescents in the U.S. have experience at least one major depressive episodes in the past year.

So what can you do?

  • Talk about the real stuff
  • Pay attention, but don’t smother them
  • Resist getting angry
  • Don’t put off getting help
  • Treat the whole family

Class of 2018

This year’s seniors have been busy looking to the future, whether that be applying to colleges or making plans to begin working following graduation.  Whenever a senior is accepted to a college they will be featured on the WMC Counseling Instagram page to recognize their accomplishments.  We want each of seniors to know how proud of them we are and want to encourage them as they make plans for the future.

To have your student take a career inventory or to get more information on prospective jobs, please check out the following one of our recommended resources, 0*NET.

This can be done at any grade level and age!

Big year for Project Grace at Western Michigan Christian High School and Middle School

Big year for Project Grace

Pastor Samuel Greer started Project Grace in December of 2000 at Western Michigan Christian as a way for students and staff to give to those in need along the lakeshore. Seventeen years later he is now the Principal at WMC and reflecting on year 17 of Project Grace, “Every year I get an opportunity to see God’s hand at work in the lives of students and staff at Western Michigan Christian High School and Middle School. One of the greatest expressions of God’s presence at our school is Project Grace. Each year we have seen God’s faithfulness in that he has enabled us to reach families in his name.” WMC students have raised over $100,000 over 17 years to provide food, clothing and gifts to families in need.

This year students raised $13,300 during the 2 week fundraising event.

Every year I get an opportunity to see God’s hand at work in the lives of students and staff at Western Michigan Christian High School and Middle School.

A focus for giving

This year’s focus was on the attitude of giving as a servant to others. Students received a devotional each day that directed them to give from a Biblical perspective. That included giving with an attitude of grace and a heart full of love for others reflecting Christ’s love for us. Scott Liggett, Assistant to the Principal and a Social Studies teacher at WMC coordinated the student efforts and was pleased with the way the project came together, “I am always amazed at the way our community of students, staff and families come together to reflect God’s love for us and give to others. That is what Christmas is about.” The students were instructed to earn money by doing projects at home, school, church and in the community in order to raise funds to purchase food, clothing and gifts for local families in need. WMC worked with local churches and organizations to get in touch with families that can use a bit of help. This year, because of the large total amount of money raised, WMC delivered to 20 families in the area. Individual classes competed in a daily competition with daily winners earning prizes such as an ice cream sundae bar, lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings, and donuts. Students earned money by working for friends and family as well as doing some special projects like selling donuts. This year’s winning class, Robin Tyink’s AP Language, class raised more than $4,000.

I am always amazed at the way our community of students, staff and families come together to reflect God’s love for us and give to others. That is what Christmas is about.

Shopping and Wrapping

Students shopped for items, brought them back to school and wrapped the gifts. Summer Lile, who graduated from WMC in 2012, is now a WMC science teacher and Project Grace is meaningful to her in a new and different way, “As a student I was never able to shop for gifts or wrap them because I was always part of our Christmas Collage at the Frauenthal. As a teacher I have been able to work with students to raise money and then take the lists that families give us and shop with my students for the items the families want. We then go back to school and wrap the gifts together. It is now one of my favorite days of the school year.”

Delivering to Families

Food, clothing and gifts were delivered Wednesday morning by the winning classes. Anna had a chance to deliver, “Bringing presents to families that wouldn’t have gotten them otherwise is the best possible way we could spread Christ’s love this Christmas. It is very important to understand that we were not these people’s Christmas savior. That was not the point. We were just trying to represent Christ who saved us. Seeing the families and little children (and adorable dogs) who we were able to lift up in prayer was definitely the reason we did this.” Project Grace is always a highlight for Pastor Greer, “It has been a blessing to see our students work to benefit others and  to see God work through our students and have them see first hand the power of giving to others. This project aligns with our mission to educate with excellence, integrate faith with knowledge, equip students to work and serve Christ in their communities.”

WMC AWARDED EXXON GRANT

Earlier this month WMC had the pleasure of receiving a $500.00 ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Grant.  This gift will be used in our science and math department as suggested by the ExxonMobil Foundation.  We are grateful to our friends at Lakes Exxon (J & H Family Stores) at 1196 E. Sternberg Rd. in Norton Shores for nominating our school and for their efforts in securing this grant on our behalf.

We will use monies from the grant to purchase an Elmo Projector to continue to be a school of excellence as we challenge and raise up this next generation of Kingdom Warriors.

Our students sent cards and notes thanking them for this wonderful Christmas gift.  Merry Christmas, Lakes Exxon!

Project Grace Day 9 Devotional: The Righteous Person

Day 9 | The Righteous Person | Proverbs 21:26

All day long he craves for more,
but the righteous give without sparing.

What does it look like to be a righteous person?

Who in the Bible is a great example of being a righteous individual? When I think of a righteous individual in scripture, my mind immediately goes to Job. Throughout the entire book you see Job rejoice in his sufferings, praise the Lord in the midst of his trails, and never cease to prove his commitment to God. All of these faithful attributes are rooted in Job’s unwavering faith and love of the Lord our God. Job gave all of his praises, time, effort, hope, and love to God without holding anything back. His love was the foundation of his readiness to give his ALL to God. This is because without love, all of his faithful actions would have been empty actions merely out of withholding some “moral standard.”

Questions:

  • In Ephesians 2:10, Jesus reminds us that we are his handiwork. We are created to look like him, how will we look more like him today?
  • How can be humble as Job was humble?

WAYS TO GIVE TO PROJECT GRACE:

  1. Join us at the GALAXY NIGHT basketball games Friday December 15. Girls Varsity at 5:30 and Boys Varsity 7pm. Galaxy Glow Sticks will be sold to benefit Project Grace and donations will be accepted at the games.
  2. Donate gift tags and tape for Project Grace gift wrapping. Tags and tape can be dropped off at the WMC office.
  3. Find a WMC student or staff member and give a donation to them.

Project Grace Day 7

God’s Generous Grace | Psalm 37:21

The wicked borrow and do not repay,
    but the righteous give generously;

This verse touches on the word “generous”. We need to know that Jesus honors a cheerful giver who receives and quickly shares with others.

Those who take and do not repay or do not give back are the wicked. We need to try working on making a change from selfishness to selflessness, generosity and the spirit of giving. When we are given material possessions, we are then held responsible in the Kingdom of God for good stewardship!

Questions:
Where do you stand with this? Are you a generous giver or do you take and not repay?

How do we make the change from selfish to selfless?

Giving total to date: $ 4,306.73

WELCOME Back To School at Western Michigan Middle and High School 2017-18!

BACK TO SCHOOL: Project Serve 2017

WMC STUDENTS BEGIN THE YEAR WITH PRAISE/WORSHIP and SERVING

WMC welcomed students this week Tuesday with sidewalk chalk greetings that included the word “Welcome” in 5 different languages, along with staff and student leader greetings. The 360 7-12 school then assembled for praise and worship followed by opening presentations given by Head of School Samuel Greer. Officer Scott VanWylen of the Mona Shores Police Department introduced the Ride with Pride program in which one student will win a car at the end of the school year.

The 71 Middle School students were dismissed to Treetop Adventure Park in Grand Rapids for team building while the 289 High School students went through school orientation sessions.

The High School students spent the afternoon serving the community at 17 different non-profit organizations along the lakeshore including the Tri-Cities YMCA, International Aid, Love in Action Grand Haven, LOVE In The Name of Christ Muskegon, Hope’s Outlet and Kids’ Food Basket. “This was a great way to start the year and included a great effort by all the students and staff on our Back to School Team,” said Assistant Principal Scott Liggett.

Head of School Samuel Greer shared, “It is important to set the tone for the year that includes spiritual development and having our school serve others.” Students and staff spent the afternoon cleaning, doing yard work, packing sack suppers along with other activities. Kathy Tabor, Director at Hope’s Outlet said, “The students worked very hard and moved a huge pile of clothes. We could not have done all of that in such a short period of time without them.”

Students had an abbreviated class schedule on Wednesday, along with small group activities and had a full day of classes Thursday.
