Our Mission through Crisis

“To follow the framework our State Legislators & Medical Professionals have decidedly provided us; as Western Michigan Christian School Collaborative strongly believes in making fact-based, faith-driven decisions that provide our Students and Community with the safest, most rationalized, most Christ-centered environment possible. Dedication to College-Preparatory, Christian Education remains a top priority and our Administration and Staff are highly committed to the task of providing this to our Student body no matter the circumstances of the environment. We see this World-wide epidemic and the footprint it is leaving on our communities as another opportunity presented to us as believers to exemplify our strong faith and fervent trust in our Lord and his unfailing plan.”

Communication Plan

It’s very important that we keep our community updated on the details. We also want to hear from you.

Current: Our communication to the WMC School Community has been in three letters and we have also reached out to our parents with a survey. We received wonderful feedback from our community.

Future: WMC will host webinars and town hall meetings to inform our school community of our reopening plan for the academic year 2020-2021.

Michigan Safe Start Plan – Phase 4

We’ve consulted with the State of Michigan, legal advisors, medical professionals and public and private schools in the effort to deliver to and excellent reopening plan for our students and teachers.

As of now, we are in Phase 4 of the Michigan Safe Start Plan for reopening the schools for fall of 2020.

For WMC, that means that on August 24, we will open our Norton Shores campus with in-person instruction with required safety protocols.

The intent is to have a more interactive experience. To be able to achieve this the safest way possible, we have outlined the safety protocols to which each student, parents and WMC staff/faculty will need to adhere.

WMC head of School, Pastor Samuel Greer, walks through our Fall 2020 Reopening in this webinar from Tuesday, July 21 below:

Western Michigan Christian Hires New Girls Soccer Coach

WMC Announces Kevin Butler as the Head Girls Soccer Coach

Western Michigan Christian High School is excited to announce the hiring of Kevin Butler as the Warriors Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach.  Butler has coached for 16 years for the Soccer Club of Rockford (SCOR).  During that span, he coached all levels ranging from U8 to U19 and was the President of SCOR for 3 years.  In addition to his involvement with SCOR, Butler was also the Director of Coaching for one year with the West Michigan Storm.

“Kevin is a great addition to the WMC coaching staff and specifically the girls soccer program.  He has a wealth of soccer knowledge.  Kevin is very relational and has a heart for mentoring young athletes through soccer,”  stated WMC Athletic Director, Kurt Gruppen.

Coach Butler is excited to get started. “It is an honor and a privilege to be able to bring my experience to the lakeshore, to lead and build the women’s program at WMC, and most importantly, do so in a Christian context. I look forward to incorporating the values of discipleship into the soccer environment, and helping these young women build character and servant leadership both on and off the field,”  stated Butler.

Kevin and his wife Dina reside in Norton Shores.

WMC Names 2019-2020 Athletes of the Year

Congratulations to Warrior Seniors Chloe Mitchell, Jameson Goorman and Brandon Fles

The WMC Athlete of the Year Award is given annually to the top male and female athlete(s) in the senior class. In the past, the presentation has taken place at the senior awards banquet. Due to COVID-19 that was not possible this year. For the 2019-2020 school year, WMC is proud to name one female and two co-athletes of the year.

Female Athlete of the Year – Chloe Mitchell

Chloe Mitchell starred on the volleyball court as a setter in 2019.  Chloe helped lead her team to a MHSAA District Championship and the school’s first-ever Regional Championship.  The Warriors were also Lakes 8 Conference Champions.

Chloe was named First Team All-Conference in the Lakes 8, MHSAA All-Region, MHSAA 1st Team All-State, 1st team Muskegon Area C/D Dream Team, Player of the Year Muskegon Area C/D Dream Team, and Academic All-State. In addition to these accolades, Mitchell also holds the school record in match assists, season assists, career assists, and career blocks.

Chloe’s leadership and athleticism were instrumental in the Warrior’s success in 2019.  Mitchell will be attending Aquinas College in the fall and playing volleyball for the Saints.

Co-Male Athlete of the Year – Jameson Goorman

Jameson Goorman makes an amazing save!
Jameson Goorman on the mound in 2019. His senior year baseball season was canceled due to COVID-19.

Jameson Goorman was the Goalkeeper on the 2019 Division 4 MHSAA State Championship soccer team.  He also helped lead the team to a Lakes 8 Conference Championship.  In addition to the team accomplishments, Goorman was named 1st team All-Conference in the Lakes 8, MHSAA All-District, All-Region, and First Team All-State.

Goorman stepped up in a huge way saving 4 of 5 shots in a shootout to win the MHSAA State Championship.  Goorman was also going to be a key contributor on the baseball team in the spring (season canceled due to COVID-19).  He would have played outfield, catcher, and pitcher for an experienced Warriors team that was looking to make some noise in the 2020 season.

In the 2019 baseball season, Goorman was named First Team All-Conference in the Lakes 8, MHSAA All-District, and Mlive All-Area.

Jameson plans on attending Muskegon Community College in the fall and playing soccer for the Jayhawks.

Co-Male Athlete of the Year – Brandon Fles

Brandon Fles was the staple on the back line for the 2019 Division 4 MHSAA State Championship soccer team.  Brandon also helped lead the Warriors to a Lakes 8 Conference Championship.  For his efforts, Fles was named 1st Team All-Conference in the Lakes 8, MHSAA All-District, All-Region, First Team All-State, and All-Academic.  With Fles anchoring the defense, the Warriors gave up only 1 goal in regulation during the State Championship run.

In the winter Fles turned his attention to the hardwood and competed for the Warrior basketball team.  He helped lead the team to the MHSAA District Championship game (canceled due to COVID-19) and a Lakes 8 Conference Championship.  In addition, he was named to the Lakes 8 All-Conference 2nd Team.

Brandon will be attending Hope College in the fall and playing soccer for the Dutchmen.

Fred VandenBrand Honored

Fred VandenBrand – a hall of fame journalist

Fred VandenBrand

Western Michigan Christian School’s very own Assistant Athletic Director, Fred VandenBrand, was honored today in the Grand Haven Tribune for his tireless and extraordinary efforts during his tenure there as managing editor.

GH Tribune community columnist, Len Painter, recalled the days when Fred worked at the Tribune and highlighted some of his contributions as a writer and a man of character:

“I certainly agree that Falls and Waldmeir belong in the hall of fame, as well as many other notable journalists in the state. According to the Michigan Hall of Fame, nominees are judged on their contributions to Michigan journalism, courage, innovation and leadership.

While he isn’t in the hall of fame, Fred VandenBrand, former managing editor of the Grand Haven Tribute, fits those attributes.

Fred worked 35 years at the Tribune, including the last 20 as managing editor before retiring in 1998. Fred was one of the most respected editors in the state. He was the key factor in the growth of the Tribune.

Fred was a great journalist but he also cared about the welfare of his co-workers and was an integral part of the career of many young journalists.

Fred’s reputation as an editor was impeccable. He helped develop many young journalists who moved on to bigger careers and was well-respected as a leader in the community.

“I am thankful for the legacy that our Assistant AD continues to leave here at WMC. Congratulations on this well deserved honor, Fred!” shares WMC Athletic Director, Kurt Gruppen.

Fred graduated from Western Michigan Christian in 1961 and has been working at his alma mater for about 15 years. He enjoys building relationships with students and keeps his writing chops honed as the editor of the WMC Sports Update, a daily e-newsletter that covers all things Warrior sports! To sign up for the WMC Sports Update email click here

Congratulations Fred! Your Warrior family loves you and we are so grateful to have our very own Hall of Famer gracing our halls, fields, and courts!

Community Update May 2019

Earlier this week, Western Michigan Christian School held our annual Community Update meeting. At the gathering, we reviewed our current 2018-19 school year and discussed an exciting look ahead.

Meeting highlights included:

-Celebrating the outstanding service of several teaching staff members who will be retiring.

-We reminded our community of student life including, but not limited to, new safety protocols, student Ride with Pride, and our commitment to the community by supporting families who are disenfranchised (i.e. Project Grace).

-An academics presentation that celebrated outstanding SAT scores, new industry arts initiatives, robotics successes, and the Teaching for Transformation (TfT) initiative.

-And last, our WMC Board Chairperson, Stu Kingma, delivered a presentation on the financial health of WMC including enrollment strategies, budget initiatives, and a vision for campus development.

Below is a letter from Stu, to you!

Dear WMC Supporters:

This past Monday night we met as a Board and Community to review this past year for WMC and to address the vision for our future.  We also were able to recognize the contributions of those teachers and board members who are finishing their time serving at WMC.  Congratulations for outstanding service!

Knowing that evening meetings such as this can be difficult for many to attend, we as a board thought it appropriate to bring the meeting and its content directly to you.  To that end, we enlisted a videographer to document the presentation and comments for your review.

The video can be accessed by clicking the link below:

Community Update Video

During the meeting, we also used a PowerPoint presentation to update the community in an understandable and transparent fashion.  The PowerPoint presentation will be a helpful reference when watching the presentation video.

The PowerPoint PDF is attached in this below link:

Community Update PowerPoint

As always, we thank you for your continued support of WMC and welcome any suggestions or comments that you would like us to consider as we continue to live out God’s will for WMC.

Thank you,

Stu Kingma
