WARRIORS TIE OPENER 3-3 WITH OV
Western Michigan Christian and Muskegon Orchard View played to a 3-3 tie Friday afternoon at Cardinal Field in the season soccer opener for both schools.
The Cardinals started a flurry of goals midway in the first half, but WMC senior Collin Breit tied it up off an assist from junior Matt Wisen with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Less than a minute later, the Cardinals took the lead, but the Warriors again tied it up less than a minute later on an unassisted goal by senior Matt DeKyryger.
With just 31 seconds remaining in the first half, the the Cardinals found the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.
The two teams played a scoreless second half until DeKryger took the ball down the right side of the field, crossed it to Wisen, who dented the twine for the equalizer with six minutes left in the contest.
WMC sophomore goalie Jacob Berens had one save and the OV keeper stopped four shots. The Warriors outshot the Cardinals 18-14.
"It was a typical first game. We learned a lot about ourselves," WMC coach David Hulings said.
JUNIOR VARSITY: Warriors lost 8-0.
