Reeths-Puffer nips Western Michigan Christian in nonleague soccer shootout

Reeths-Puffer scored early and scored late to defeat Western Michigan Christian 4-3 on Saturday in a non-league boys soccer shootout.

The Rockets scored two goals in the game's first 2 ½ minutes, only to see the Warriors tie the game with two goals of their own in the span of less than 2 minutes.

After two 10-minute overtime sessions, the Rockets captured the victory by outscoring the Warriors 5-4 in the shootout.

“It was a great game for both teams,” WMC coach David Hulings said. “Reeths-Puffer came out strong and finished strong.”

Kameron Fowler gave the Rockets a 1-0 lead just 21 seconds into the game and Eric Hilt scored 2 minutes later to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

Alec Breit scored on a penalty kick and Matt Wisen scored with an assist from Chaise Schuiteman to even the score for WMC (6-2-1).

The Warriors put on heavy offensive pressure throughout the second half, but could not produce a go-ahead goal. With 8 seconds remaining in the first overtime, WMC junior Lucas Negan scored after the Rocket goal had been vacated by keeper Thomas Swiatek.

In the second overtime, Austin Blaski pushed a shot behind Warrior keeper Jacob Berens and the game was tied again.

The Rockets (3-6-1) captured the victory after all five of its shooters connected in the shootout.

WMC outshot Puffer 19-11.
