Western Michigan Christian girls suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday night as host Muskegon Orchard View hit a layup at the buzzer to give the Cardinals a 49-47 win.
With the game tied 47-47, the Cardinals took the ball out under the Warriors’ basket with five seconds remaining. Yonique McClure threw the ball the length of the floor to Tiera Hill for the winning basket.
The Warriors, 2-1, playing three players short for various reasons and forced to bring up freshmen Jessica Knoll from the JV team to have a seven-player roster, trailed 12-10 at the first stop, were tied 21-21 at intermission, but led 36-34 going into the final period.
WMC’s Elyse Ray and Rachel Bruinsma had 13 points apiece. Ray also had eight rebounds while sophomore Julie Merz dished out 10 assists and had five steals. Sophomore Vanessa Eekhoff also grabbed 8 rebounds.
McClure led Orchard View with 19 points while Hill scored 14. |
