WMC ADVANCES TO REGIONAL FINAL FRIDAY WITH 6-0 WIN OVER HARBOR LIGHT

Western Michigan Christian blew into the Division 4 boys soccer regional finals on Tuesday with a 6-0 victory over Harbor Springs-Harbor Light Christian at Suttons Bay High School.

With wind gusts estimated at up to 40 to 50 mph, the Warriors scored two goals in the opening half when they played with the wind and four in the second half while playing against the wind.

WMC (19-2-1), ranked No. 3 in Division 4 in the state, will face regional host Suttons Bay, ranked No. 8 at 7 p.m. Friday. The Norsemen scored three first half goals with the wind at their backs and then hung on for a 3-1 victory over McBain Northern Michigan Christian in Tuesday's second game.

The Warriors scored with less than two minutes off the clock when junior Zach Meyers lofted a shot from the left side that sailed over Swordsmen goalkeeper Jake Ellis and into the net. Collin Breit assisted.

In the middle of the first half, junior Matt Wisen found Breit in front of the goal and Breit scored the first of his two goals of the night, giving WMC a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Warriors took control of the game in the second half despite playing with the strong, gusty winds blowing in their faces.

Breit scored his second goal after receiving a pass from Ryan Briggs midway through the final half.

Wisen scored minutes later off an assist from Breit and then Jason Prince made a strong run down the right side and blasted a shot past the keeper.

With two minutes remaining, Bailey Heykoop, brought up from the junior varsity for the tournaments, headed in the final goal off an assist from Jon Cook.

“I thought when we played into the wind, we played better,” WMC coach David Hulings said.

The Warriors out shot the Swordsmen 27-3 and sophomore keep Jacob Berens made three saves en route to the shutout.

“We’re down to a three-game tournament now,” Hulings said.

If the Warriors win Friday's regional championship game, they would advance to the state semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at either Holton or Cedar Springs.

The Division 4 state finals are Nov. 6 at either East Kentwood or Troy Athens.
