|
WMC defeated cross-town River Valley Conference rival Muskegon Catholic in a very tight three-set match with scores of 25-22, 30-28 and 25-21.
Leading the offense for the Warriors were Lauren Merz with 14 kills and 3 blocks while Elyse Ray added 9 kills and 5 blocks.
Victoria Arangure' had 24 assists with Bonnie Heykoop adding 4 and Ashley Oosterhouse 3.
Defensively, Julie Merz led with 15 digs while Rachel Bruinsma and Elyse Ray each added 14.
Ray also dealt 4 aces and Bruinsma and Vanessa Eekhoff added 2 each.
In our first match-up with MCC this fall, the Warriors lost in four sets, so it was very gratifying to take this one in three tonight. It was a very exciting match with WMC going down in the first set and coming back to win. The Lady Warriors were down 7-15 and Vanessa Eekhoff put a couple of serves together to give the Warriors some momentum, and then Elyse Ray served to put us in position to finish it off.
The second set went back and forth several times before some aggressive plays by the team finished it off. In the third set the girls did not let up, but kept up the momentum and played to the last point "I would say we really did a much better job taking care of the ball tonight," WMC coach Bret Noordhof said. "Our passing was much improved, making the setter's job much easier and our offense much more effective. A very complete match tonight."
JUNIOR VARSITY: WMC dropped two to MCC by scores of 25-4, 25-23. "Our girls played awesome!" coach Dana Engel said. "They worked together, supported each other and had heart tonight. The girls did a good job executing all the things we emphasized in practice this week. We have been striving to reach this point and tonight the girls did. I am so proud!" We are looking forward to the next few weeks we have left together."
FRESHMEN: WMC lost to Spring Lake in two sets. Neither team served particularly well, but again, the girls played hard and never gave up. "We had one particular long rally that exemplified the way the girls play. After the ball went over the net 8-10 times, the girls maintained their composure and eventually won the point, WMC coach Lois Hallenbeck said.
SOCCER: A goal with just over two minutes left in the game gave Western Michigan Christian a 2-1 win over Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian and a guarantee of at least a share of the River Valley Conference championship. A win over Muskegon Catholic at home Tuesday would give the Warriors the league title. After a scoreless first half, the Warriors took the lead when junior Matt Wisen sent a pass to senior Collin Breit who found the back of the net.
With just over eight minutes remaining, the Mustangs scored on about a 40-yard kick the found the upper right corner of the goal and over the out-stretched hands of WMC keeper Jacob Berens.
WIth two minutes and four second left, freshman Alex Rop sent a ball from the right side to the middle when Matt DeKryger controlled it and blasted it home. WMC out shot the Mustangs 7-5 and Berens made two saves. "You never like to give up the tying goal in the closing moments, but it was good for us to have to battle back and we did," WMC coach David Hulings said. "We would have been happy with a 1-0 win, but this kind of pressure will be good for us down the road." JUNIOR VARSITY: The Warriors battled back after being down1-0 and defeated NorthPointe 2-1. Alex Oosterhouse put in the equalizer and Justin Kollar scored the game winner.
