WARRIORS TIE OPENER 3-3 WITH OV
Western Michigan Christian and Muskegon Orchard View played to a 3-3 tie Friday afternoon at Cardinal Field in the season soccer opener for both schools.
The Cardinals started a flurry of goals midway in the first half, but WMC senior Collin Breit tied it up off an assist from junior Matt Wisen with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Less than a minute later, the Cardinals took the lead, but the Warriors again tied it up less than a minute later on an unassisted goal by senior Matt DeKyryger.
With just 31 seconds remaining in the first half, the the Cardinals found the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.
The two teams played a scoreless second half until DeKryger took the ball down the right side of the field, crossed it to Wisen, who dented the twine for the equalizer with six minutes left in the contest.
WMC sophomore goalie Jacob Berens had one save and the OV keeper stopped four shots. The Warriors outshot the Cardinals 18-14.
"It was a typical first game. We learned a lot about ourselves," WMC coach David Hulings said.
JUNIOR VARSITY: Warriors lost 8-0.

Parental Areas of Focus
PARENTAL AREAS OF FOCUS
Athletic events begin this week and with that comes a question: What are parental areas of focus?
WMC varsity soccer coach David Hulings handed out this information at the soccer teams' parent meeting last week and I felt it was a good idea to share with all parents of WMC athletes:
(1) Release your athlete to their own experience. Ask them three questions: (a) Why they want to play; (b) What they think their team role should be; (c) What they want from the season.
(2) Release your athlete to the lessons of the game.
(3) Release your athlete to the coaching staff.
(4) Make sure there is only one instructional voice.
(5) There are five roles at any contest: (a) Coach; (b) Officiate; (c) Play; (d) Cheer and encourage; (e) Volunteer. Be the best at your role!
(6) After the game, don't rehash the game. Build their confidence - don't criticize their play. Be a relationship builder not a destroyer - don't tear down other players or coaches.
The soccer teams' theme this season is: From Luke 21:1 - This is the parable about the widow who "put in all she had!" What would happen in our family, school, church or soccer team or any team if we put in all we had for Christ?
